Know India Programme

Know India Programme of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs [MOIA] is a three-week orientation programme for diaspora youth conducted with a view to promote awareness on different facets of life in India and the progress made by the country in various fields e.g. economic, industrial, education, Science & Technology, Communication & Information Technology, culture. KIP provide a unique forum for students & young professionals of Indian origin to visit India, share their views, expectations & experiences and to develop closer bonds with the contemporary India. 4-5 such programmes are conducted every year in partnership with one or two State Governments.

Based on recommendations received from Heads of Indian Missions/Posts abroad, About 35 Indian Diaspora Youth in the age group of 18-26 years, are selected for each programme Selected participants are provided with full hospitality in India during the duration of the programme. 90% (ninety percent) of the total cost of air ticket (at lowest economy excursion fare) is refundable to the participants on successful completion of the programme by them.

The content of the programme broadly includes the following:

  • Presentations on the country, political process, developments in various sectors,
  • Interaction with faculty and students at a prestigious University/College/Institute,
  • Presentation on the industrial development and visits to some Industries,
  • Visit to a village to better understand the typical village life,
  • Exposure to Indian media,
  • Interaction with NGOs and organizations dealing with women affairs,
  • Visit to places of historical importance/Monuments,
  • Taking part in Cultural programmes,
  • Exposure to yoga,
  • Call on high dignitaries, which may include President of India, Chief Election Commissioner of India, Comptroller and Auditor General of India, and Ministers in-charge of Overseas Indian Affairs, Youth Affairs and Sports.

So far MOIA has organized 24 Know India Programmes in which 729 Overseas Diaspora Youth have participated in these programmes.

Know India Programme 2016

The 35th Know India Programme (KIP) is scheduled from 5th May to 29th May, 2016 to familiarize Indian Diaspora youth with India’s culture, heritage and also with contemporary India. KIP will be for a duration of Duration of 25 days, of which participants will spend nearly 10 days in a select State. Focus of next KIP will be "Maharashtra State”, and is scheduled from 07 May to 01 June, 2016.

The highlight of this year’s KIP is a tour of Maharashtra, on board the luxury train "Deccan Odyssey", thanks to the support of the State Government of Maharashtra.

This programme is open only for Indian origin Diaspora youth in age group of 18-26 years. NRIs are not eligible. Preference would be given to PIOs who have not visited India so far.

Completed application forms should be submitted by PIOs to concerned Indian Missions before 10 April 2016.

List of applicants who have been selected for KIP would be communicated to concerned Missions / Posts as early as possible.

Selected participants have to purchase their flight ticket for their journey from the country of residence to India and back, as per schedule prescribed by the Ministry. Concerned Indian Mission/Post would reimburse 90% (ninety percent) of the total cost of air ticket (at lowest economy excursion fare) to participants on successful completion of the programme by them

Know India Programme 2016-17

Ministry of External Affairs of Government of India is organizing the 36th edition of Know India Programme (KIP) from 1st to 25th October 2016 to strengthen engagement with young overseas Indians. KIP is an engagement programme for Diaspora youth (between the age of 18-30 years) of Indian origin to introduce them to India and promote awareness about different facets of Indian life, our cultural heritage, art and the transformation taking place in India. This programme is open to youth of Indian origin (excluding non-resident Indians). The programme has been in existence since 2003. Focus of this KIP will be "Punjab”.

Revised Guidelines, application form and itinerary for the October 2016 KIP are below:

Main KIP Guidelines/criteria for selection of participants:

  • (a) Duration of KIP is 25 days inclusive of 10 days in a select State.
  • (b) The maximum age for participations in KIP is30 years. KIP participants should be in the age group of 18 to 30 years.
  • (c) Embassy will arrange for return air tickets before participants leave for India, after the KIP participants pays 10% of total airfare. Participants are required to sign a written undertaking that if he/she does not complete the KIP the amount spent on airfare by Govt. of India will be refunded to the Embassy.
  • (d) KIP participant should have an international travel and medical insurance before Embassy can issue air ticket. This is a mandatory provision.
  • (e) KIP participants may submit proof of Indian Origin such as a PIO/OCI card of themselves; parents or grandparents.

All PIOs are encouraged to participate in the KIP. Completed application forms should be submitted to the Embassy of India, Budapest by 25th August, 2016. Selected applicants for KIP would be informed by the Embassy as early as possible.
